HAIR LOOKS FOR 2013

Nothing updates your look quite like a new hairstyle, but should you go for colour or cut.   Have a look at the hair looks for 2013.

“Vintage hair will be a big influence this year, with the release of The Great Gatsby bringing back clean and simple, yet playful hairstyles,” says Brian Gallagher of Gallagher Horner in Glasgow. “Working with dual textures, the look is feminine and ethereal.”

"This style [Gloss] is perfect for a self-assured woman who isn’t afraid to experiment with her look,” explains Schwarzkopf stylist Armin Morbach.
“Whether it’s worn with a side parting, centre parting or asymmetrically, hair curlers or curling tongs are essential to create the look. A warm shade (try Schwarzkopf Color Mask 300 Black Brown or Color Mask 400 Dark Brown) and glossy finish perfects the look.”

Ombre coloured tresses were big news for 2012 and the trend looks set to be even bigger.

This year the look gets a twist, with more dramatic colour graduations (think Jessie J dark roots and light blonde ends). Look out for reverse ombre too, with blonde roots and dark ends.

To get the look at home, try the new L'Oréal Dip Dye wild ombre hair colour. With its easy to use brush-on tool, you can control your own two-toned finish.

Inspired by the Manhattan scene, the bob is given a sophisticated twist for 2013 – with a cool blonde shade, lots of volume and plenty of attitude.

“The focus is on the interplay between different degrees of volume on the sides and the back of the head. By backcombing and turning under the long hair to create a fake bob, we also create horizontal volume,” explains Armin Morbach.

If you’re thinking about getting a cut and colour this year, go for a fringe and be daring with red.

“What’s special about this trend is the wide fringe which is cut straight and square”, explains Morbach. “We saw lots of short fringes on the catwalks, but an eyebrow-length fringe is easier to wear and it suits most women.”

Get the look at home with Schwarzkopf Live Colour XXL 35 Real Red or for a more copper result, try Live Color XXL Ultra Brights 90 Fiery Copper.

“Pixie cuts and crops will be huge this year,” says Karen Basra of Kenchez in Wolverhampton. “Think soft-yet-stylish boyish cuts that use texture to add a feminine edge.”

For maximum impact, team short hair with a dramatic colour. “Short hair is striking, especially when bleached blonde,” adds Karen. “In salon, ask for blondes without yellow tones and a short, low-maintenance textured cut that you can play with at home using texturising wax products.”

If you want to make a real style statement this year, go for a dramatic cut. “Precision cutting is a key trend for 2013,” says Dan Spiller, stylist at Marc Antoni in Fleet.

“For maximum impact, ask your stylist for a tailored shape that accentuates your natural features, such as eyes and cheekbones.”

If you only do one thing in 2013, get a fringe.

“From micro fringes to eyebrow skimmers, textured to uniform, fringes are set to be bigger than ever this year,” says Shelly Smith of Room97 Creative Hairdressing. 'The forehead decoration/fringe is the perfect way to finish off any hair cut.”

This look is about expressive colour - think multi-coloured highlights, streaks, ombre graduation and bright roots and tips.

“For 2013, coloured hair is worn with a centre parting, long and ultra-glossy or as an asymmetrical undercut,” says Morbach.

For a similar vibrant shade, try new Live Colour XXL Ultra Brights 95 Electric Blue. It may be daring but its versatile too, insists Morbach. “Wear it withan evening gown or with a punky outfit with a leather jacket and biker boots.”

The ‘boho’ bun has become a firm favourite with celebrities on the red carpet, and we can expect to see more ‘undone’ looks this year.
Wear in the day for a casual look or glam up for the evening - just be sure to add plenty of height at the crown of the head and keep the bun low down and messy!
