SAVE THE CHILDREN

. In the true spirit of Christmas, five top models and designers have paired up to create covetable designs to raise money for Save the Children.

Kate Moss wearing the Bella Freud jumper

All of the models and designers involved talk about the fun they had working on their Christmas jumpers, but also with passion for the seriousness of the cause and the importance of the fashion world taking a stand.

Bella says: ‘I was trying to think of a good word or phrase to put on a Christmas jumper. But that made my mind go blank. And Kate said,“What about ‘Fairytale of New York?’” And that was instantly it. It’s such a poetic title, it’s romantic – andthen there’s Shane MacGowan, who is a great friend ours. It was typical of Kate to come up with the most brilliant phrase.’

Erin O'Connor with designer Giles Deacon

We didn’t want our jumper to be too Christmas. We’d just finished the autumn/winter collections and we’d done lots of crochet and embellishments, so it seemed a really good idea to put those on to the collar and cuffs. Erin came up with the colour combo, and it came out great.

‘When I was growing up, my family always had hilariously decorated Christmas socks. We’d all put tinsel and baubles on them. I think my mother will have some terrifying photos somewhere, which I should make sure she takes to the end of the garden and burns.’

Dree Hemingway with designer Henry Holland

Henry launched his label in 2008. He now designs both women’s and men’s collections. He also presents Channel 4’s The Changing Room.
Henry says: ‘Dree’s got a great sense of humour. She’s a ball of energy. In many ways she’s a bit anti-fashion and follows her own rules. In my home we didn’t have Christmas jumpers, we had Christmas stockings. We got them from Norway – they’re as tall as I am now, so when I was a kid, it was this huge thing. We always used to wear our new pyjamas on Christmas Day and only take them off to get dressed for dinner.’

For me, Christopher Kane was the perfect designer to work with on a Christmas jumper. Our design is kooky and cosy. It’s the perfect jumper to wear to the pub or a wine bar, but it’s also a showstopper.

Karen Elson wearing the Charlotte Olympia jumper

Karen says: ‘I chose Charlotte to design my jumper because I’ve always been a fan of what she does – there’s a whimsy to her designs that I thought would be nice. I thought we could do something involving red shoes. Charlotte said, “Great, how about a leopard eating a sparkly red heel?” And I went, “That sounds incredible!” The point was to be fun. And girlie and feminine; all the things I like.
