MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT

Out in Cinemas 19th October 2014

The woman behind the costumes of Woody Allen's latest movie Costume Designer Sonia Grande
found working on the movie was a great opportunity to show off the flamboyance of the roaring twenties.  "The Twenties were the beginning of freedom - fashion was no longer dictated by aristocrats, but by film stars, artists, painters, writers, photographers, jazz, all looking for new forms of expression in that wonderful nerve centre that was Paris during those years," Said Grande. "Twenties fashion represents freedom, modernity and liberation and was somehow the beginning of the democratisation of fashion."

Recreating period costumes authentically isn't easy, and Grande found herself meticulously scouring the globe to get it just right.

"We began a worldwide search, contacting collectors, auctioneers, fairs, markets and vintage shops in America, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, England, Canada, France and Hong Kong," said Grande. "
I have to say it was wonderful to rescue some of these gems and give them a second chance. Original clothing creates an indescribable energy in the general atmosphere of a movie.
But getting this quality in just five weeks of construction is really very complicated, therefore I designed the costumes with drawings and visual references to make some of the costumes and find the most appropriate vintage pieces to complete the evolution of the female characters."
