THE PENCIL SKIRT

The silhouette for A/W 2012 is sleek and pared down.  Enter an old classic the pencil skirt.  often worn with high heels and blouse, the 21st century way to wear your pencil skirt is with a sloppy joe sweater and ankle boots, this will give your look a modern twist.

Pencil skirts  no longer mean you can't run for the bus or have to take smaller steps to get from A to B, modern fabrics now allow enough stretch that moves with your body so movement is less restricted.

Pencil skirts for 2012 are peplumed to show off womanly curves or panels in contrast colours and fabrics that elongate and slim the body.

Here are some examples from dorothyperkins.co.uk

Frill peplum skirt            Oversize dogtooth pencil

Black peplum bow belted skirt               Black diagonal peplum skirt

Black side ruffle skirt                Mini dogtooth pencil

COCO CHANEL

The 19th August marked 129 years of the birth of  Gabriel Coco Chanel.  Coco Chanel was probably the most influential designer of the 20th Century, hers is a legacy that will live forever, she left modern women so many things to be greatful for the "LBD" little black dress, costume jewellery, suits for women, trousers, the tweed jacket, pearl necklace, quilting, leather trim, signature colours red and black, not to mention Chanel No 5

Coco Chanel

"A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous."

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman."

"I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny."

"There is no time for cut-and-dried monotony. There is time for work. And time for love. That leaves no other time."
"Scheherezade is easy; a little black dress is difficult."

"Elegance is not the perogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence, but of those who have already taken possession of their future."

"A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future."

"Adornment, what a science! Beauty, what a weapon! Modesty, what elegance!"

NOTTINGHILL 2012 EUROPES BIGGEST STREET PARTY

A million people flocked to Nottinghill for this years Carnival and they were not disappointed. The festival kicked off with a Steel band Panorama on the Saturday bank holiday followed by children's day on the Sunday, with Bank holiday Monday ending the parade with Mass from over 80 Bands taking part. Nottinghill has become a rich smoggasbord of cultural diversity, with Socca sounds, Samba dancers and traditional steel bands which all adds to a caccophony of sound down in Nottinghill.

Those of us that were there enjoyed the colourful pageantry, spectacle and theatre that exploded onto the street. We hummed our way home having enjoyed two days of dancing, drinking and eating scrumptious Carribean fare.

The sights and the sounds will live long into the memory until we gather again next year to do it all again.  Proving that there is only one place to be over August Bank Holiday weekend at Europes biggest Street party The Nottinghill Carnival.

BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

There is an event taking place over August bank holiday which attracts visitors from all over the globe and has been taking place since the early sixties.  it is renowed for being the biggest street party in Europe.

The audience will be bigger than any Olympic event ever staged, yet the mainstream media in the UK will only report the number of arrests and the number of policemen on duty.

"The Nottinghill Carnival." Those of us drawn to this street festival year after year are pulled there by the colour,  the pageantry, music, food, all rolled into one great big party in which for one weekend you can lose yourself in revellery at its best. If you are going you have my permission to enjoy yourself, so blow that whistle.
